Trial lawyer: Practicing attorney with Young, Henrie & McCarthy and the Law Offices of John
McCarthy from 1973 to 1975. Represented cities, developers, citizen groups and environmental
organizations in trials and appeals involving real estate. A California Attorney since 1973.
Builder: Journeyman carpenters’ union card at age 9. Worked as a carpenter
to pay his way through Law School. Fixes and Flips homes in the Triangle area of North Carolina.

Married to Judy Burrell, his elementary school sweetheart, since 1969. Two children, Laurie
Hughes and Jeff Burrell, and six grandchildren.
